IFAB Approves Major Rule Changes Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has officially approved several significant amendments to the Laws of the Game, set to come into effect from 1 June 2026.

The new regulations will be implemented in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will also apply throughout the 2026/27 domestic season.

Key Changes Approved:

  • VAR Expanded – Video Assistant Referee will now review corner decisions and second yellow cards, broadening its influence on key match incidents.
  • 5-Second Countdown – Goalkeepers and players will face a visible five-second countdown when taking goal-kicks and throw-ins, aimed at reducing time-wasting.
  • 10-Second Substitution Rule – Teams must complete substitutions within 10 seconds once initiated, speeding up restarts.
  • β€œDaylight” Offside Rule Trial – The offside proposal championed by ArsΓ¨ne Wenger will be trialled in Canada starting April 2026. Under this concept, an attacking player will be considered onside if any part of their body is in line with the last defender β€” effectively requiring clear β€œdaylight” between attacker and defender for an offside to be given.

IFAB says the changes are designed to improve game flow, increase attacking opportunities, and enhance fairness through technology.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, these adjustments could significantly reshape how elite football is played and officiated on the global stage.
